Melampyrum lineare

Narrow-leaf Cow-wheat

Narrow-leaf cow-wheat (Melampyrum lineare) photographed with a macro lens.

This tiny plant has specialized root structures that allow it to penetrate the roots of red oak, pine and low-bush blueberry to extract water, minerals and sugars.

It is a hemi-parasite since it can also photosynthesize.
